UNITED NATIONS HISTORIC GENERAL ASSEMBLY
(DISEC)

Agenda:
Addressing the Internationalisation of the Korean War and the Flow of Arms to the Conflict (1950)

Freeze Date: 7th October, 1950

ABOUT COMMITTEE

History often warns us quietly before it screams. Today, we are tasked not merely with recalling the past, but with recognising its patterns, and deciding whether we will repeat them or rise above them.

We stand on 7th October, 1950.

Just when the world believed that the devastation of the Second World War had taught humanity the cost of unchecked ambition, a new conflict began to rise in East Asia. Under Kim Il‑sung, North Korea’s invasion of the South did more than violate a border. It dragged the world back to the very conflict it thought it had finally escaped.

Peace had begun to feel permanent until history reminded humanity that it never retires without a fight.

What began as a local war quietly expanded into a global concern. The United States entered theconflict under the UN flag. The Soviet Union supplied support from behind the scenes. China had also positioned itself along the Yalu River, deciding whether to step in. Meanwhile, nationsfar beyond Asia also felt the impact: through refugee movements, economic strain, and rising pressure to choose a side in an increasingly polarised world. And in the middle of this, a warningcame from the Secretary‑General, Trygve Lie:

“If the UN fails in Korea, it fails in its most fundamental purpose,” and delegates let this be your catalyst.

Today, UN forces have crossed into North Korea, and the world is on its toes. One wrong move, one miscalculation, and the bullet fired in Korea could set off a domino effect that no one can stop.

Delegates, this war is no longer confined to the Korean Peninsula. It has become a test of collective security, of ideological restraint, and of the very relevance of the United Nations in a divided world. The decisions taken here will determine whether the UN is a platform for action, or merely a spectator to escalation. The line between containment and catastrophe has never been thinner.

While the committee will retain the fundamental structure and discipline of a traditional General Assembly, the pace of debate will be notably faster and more dynamic. Delegates will be assessed not only on procedure and substance, but also on adaptability, wit, rhetorical finesse, and presence of mind. Expect a high-energy committee that values sharp thinking, effective diplomacy, and engaging arguments.

As you step into this war zone,

On the 38th Parallel, soldiers wait for orders.

The world waits for answers.

The next move is yours. All of it lands here.

In this room. In your hands.

With that, the floor is yours.

Welcome to DISEC.

CHAIRPERSONS' ADDRESS

Greetings Delegates!

We welcome you to the United Nations General Assembly - Disarmament and International Security Committee, which will be simulated at the fifteenth edition of La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations.

If you ever see someone dancing from class to class or from committee to committee while simultaneously fishing for conflict, be rest assured you’ve found one of your chairpersons, TavishiSinghal (also your Deputy Secretary General). If you ever need to give feedback about a committee oryour life, Tavishi is the one to turn to (but remember, she will listen and most definitely judge). If youever see Tavishi up at 4 am, it’s not because she woke up that early. It’s because she never went to sleep. Itis for you to figure out if she’s working or watching Brooklyn 99. Whether it’s your life or scrapping yourdraft resolution, attention to detail is the key to Tavishi’s heart, or she will spot what you missed beforeyou finish your sentence. Be it your sovereignty or a can of Coke, Tavishi can lobby you into giving heranything. So, if you want to get into Tavishi’s good books, make sure to use well-structured rhetoric in committee (whether it is by quoting Bollywood or roasting a politician). A true Marwari through andthrough, Tavishi tried Physics but came back to her real roots as the only Commerce student in a class fullof Dustin Hendersons. To sum it all up, Tavishi will not only make her committee fun and memorable butalso the conference a success, making her the perfect person to count on.

If you ever see someone getting all her work done on time while still managing to get 20 hours of sleep per day, you have found your other chairperson, Saanvi Pasari. Whether it be leading a protest or breaking into the British national anthem mid-committee, Saanvi knows how to get everyone’s attention with justone speech. She expects your speeches to be theatrical enough to deserve a standing ovation, but not fast enough to trigger her iron deficiency. She looks like a cinnamon roll and is a cinnamon roll (but only when she needs you to do her work). If you want someone to solve a maths problem for you, Saanvi is your go-to person, but just make sure that you don’t forget to bribe her with chocolates (without nuts). She might not be able to cross a road by herself, but memorising the entire UN charter is a piece of cake for her. From being a complete introvert to knowing how to dominate committees, her transformation was just like that of  Naina’s from YJHD. For Saanvi, chairing this committee is just as special as Virat Kohli lifting the IPL trophy, and she will make sure that for every delegate coming to her committee, the three days will be worth the wait.

Divided by our opinions on dogs but united by our love for Bollywood, we as chairpersons hope to strike the perfect balance in the committee. With a height difference that one deserves and personalities that contrast just as well with Tavishi being the hyper one and Saanvi the “chill guy”, we aim to ensure a committee that is engaging and dynamic. We hope that your decisions in committee will be worthy enough to go down in history. We look forward to hosting you. All the best!

역사가 다시 쓰여지도록 하자

Until May,

Tavishi Singhal and Saanvi Pasari,

Chairpersons,

United Nations General Assembly First Committee,

La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations, 2026.
