UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY
(SPECPOL)

Agenda:
Addressing the Escalation and Implications of the Yom kippur War (1973)

Freeze Date: 6th October, 1973

ABOUT COMMITTEE

“In war, truth is the first casualty.”

The sirens cut through the stillness of the holiest day.

From the Golan Heights to the banks of the Suez, silence shatters as artillery speaks. At dawn on 6 October 1973, the Middle East awakens not to prayer alone, but to the roar of a conflict that threatens to redraw borders, break alliances, and pull the world’s great powers into its gravity.

For years, an uneasy calm has lingered after the Six-Day War. Maps were redrawn, armies rearmed, and grievances buried not resolved. Territories occupied. Honor wounded. Deterrence tested.

Two coalitions collide one seeking to reclaim what was lost, the other determined to defend what was gained. Tanks surge across deserts. Missiles streak across skies.

This is not merely a war of borders and battalions. It is a war of pride, legitimacy, and survival. Every advance on the battlefield escalates rivalries between superpower, global oil markets, and the credibility of the United Nations. One misstep risks escalation far beyond the region.

History is unfolding in real time.

The world is watching.

The responsibility is yours.

CHAIRPERSONS' ADDRESS

A little bit about your chairpersons,

Winston Churchill once said, “I am very easily satisfied with the very best.”

This is a principle that your chairperson tries to apply to every aspect of life- though not always successfully, he tries and tries again.

While undecided about whether he prefers cabinets or conventional committees, Shiv Chatterjee is sure that he likes winning Best Delegate awards (hattricks preferably) and that Lewis Hamilton’s will to live has been sapped by the Italian giant, that is Ferrari. When not dominating committee, you can find him discussing everything from his current favorite book ‘Brighter than a thousand suns’ to how Pep Guardiola should have adjusted his tactics for last Sundays matchday (he does a lot of the latter). His conversations with you about Manchester City will be almost as engaging as the situations he will throw at you in committee. As May approaches, you can be sure that his handling of and decisions in committee will have you at the edge of your seat (maybe even off it)- is that a risk you are willing to take?

“Mercy to the enemy is cruelty to your own survival.”

The above quote is perhaps the line which will describe Aryan the best. Often dubbed the Jordan Belfort of the batch, Aryan Jain is the person everyone turns to for stock tips, finance gyaan, though be warned, ask him about stocks and you might be signing up for a two-hour monologue. He is interested in financial markets & has tremendous sales skills, which enable him to convince anyone to do whatever he wants.

Aryan is the kind of person you can call at 3 a.m. for advice, and he will not only pick up but give you a solution. In committee, his first impression may seem innocent or even naive but once debate begins, he unleashes a storm. Relentlessly competitive, fiercely strategic, and merciless in pursuit of victory, he does whatever it takes to win.

His unwavering confidence, quick thinking, and razor-sharp instincts have made him the MUNer with the most awards in our batch . Outside committee, expect the lamest jokes delivered with full confidence and if you’re in a room with Aryan, you’ll be laughing till your stomach hurts.

What Aryan expects in his committee is that delegates have great negotiation and ruthless strategic thinking. The ability to read in between the lines, think on their feet, make alliances, and secure victory through intellect.

Until May,

Shiv Chatterjee and Aryan Jain,

Chairpersons,

United Nations General Assembly - SPECPOL,

La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations 2026.
